Custom Mouthguards for Young Athletes in Fitchburg, MA
Youth sports are a big part of growing up in Fitchburg, MA. From youth soccer leagues to basketball and wrestling, kids are active and competitive. But one piece of protective gear often gets overlooked — the mouthguard. Understanding why custom mouthguards beat store-bought for young athletes in Fitchburg can make a real difference in protecting your child’s smile for life.
At SmileCare Dental of Fitchburg, Dr. Mark Berenshteyn sees firsthand what happens when dental injuries occur during sports. The good news is that most of these injuries are preventable. The right mouthguard is one of the smartest investments a sports family can make.
The Real Risk: Dental Injuries in Youth Sports
Dental injuries are among the most common sports-related injuries in children. Studies show that athletes without mouthguards are 60 times more likely to suffer dental trauma. That is a staggering number — and it affects kids every season.
Common sports dental injuries include:
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
- Broken dental restorations
- Jaw fractures and dislocations
- Soft tissue lacerations to the lips and cheeks
These injuries are not just painful in the moment. They can have long-term consequences for a child’s oral health, appearance, and confidence. Treating a knocked-out tooth or a fractured jaw requires significant dental work. Prevention through a proper mouthguard is far simpler and more affordable than treatment after the fact.
Sports like football, hockey, and lacrosse are obvious risks. But basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and even skateboarding carry real dental danger too. Any sport with physical contact or fall risk warrants mouthguard use.
Custom Mouthguards vs. Store-Bought: What Fitchburg Parents Need to Know
Walk into any sporting goods store and you will find boil-and-bite mouthguards on the shelf. They are inexpensive and widely available. But there is a significant gap between what those products offer and what a custom-fitted mouthguard provides.
Here is a clear comparison of the two options:
- Fit: Store-bought guards offer a generic shape. Custom guards are molded precisely to your child’s teeth.
- Protection: Custom guards distribute impact force more evenly across the jaw. Store-bought guards often shift during play.
- Comfort: A well-fitted custom guard stays in place without biting down. Boil-and-bite versions are often bulky and uncomfortable.
- Breathing and speech: Custom guards are thinner and allow easier breathing. Athletes communicate better and perform with more confidence.
- Durability: Custom guards are made from professional-grade materials. Store-bought versions degrade faster with regular use.
A mouthguard that does not fit properly is one that an athlete will not wear consistently. Comfort drives compliance — and compliance is everything when it comes to injury prevention.
Custom mouthguards are fabricated using impressions of your child’s actual teeth. Dr. Berenshteyn and the team at SmileCare Dental of Fitchburg ensure each guard fits snugly and comfortably. The result is a device your young athlete will actually want to wear during every practice and game.
How Custom Mouthguards Are Made at SmileCare Dental of Fitchburg
The process of getting a custom mouthguard is simple and quick. Most families are surprised by how easy it is. Here is what to expect during a typical appointment:
- Dental exam: Dr. Berenshteyn examines your child’s teeth and bite. This ensures the guard will be designed for their current dental development.
- Impressions taken: A dental impression captures the exact shape of your child’s teeth. This is fast, painless, and takes just a few minutes.
- Lab fabrication: The impressions are sent to a professional dental lab. A custom-fitted guard is crafted from high-quality, durable material.
- Fitting appointment: The finished guard is checked for fit and comfort. Minor adjustments can be made right in the office.
The entire process typically requires two short visits. The result is a mouthguard that fits like a glove and provides real, measurable protection. It is worth every minute invested.
Children’s teeth change as they grow. Guards should be checked and updated regularly — usually every season or year — to ensure continued optimal fit. Bring the guard to routine dental checkups so Dr. Berenshteyn can assess it alongside your child’s overall oral health.
Protecting More Than Just Teeth
A well-fitted custom mouthguard does more than protect individual teeth. It also helps protect the jaw, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and surrounding soft tissues. Impact forces spread more evenly across the guard rather than concentrating on one spot.
There is also growing evidence that proper mouthguards may help reduce the risk of concussions. While more research is ongoing, the biomechanics are promising. Protecting the jaw from sudden impact may reduce the rotational forces that contribute to brain injury.
Beyond physical protection, there is also an emotional benefit. Young athletes who feel protected play with more confidence. They are less hesitant in contact situations, which can actually reduce awkward falls and collisions caused by hesitation.
Good oral health is connected to overall health in many ways. Dental trauma can lead to Gum Disease Treatment needs down the road if injuries are left unaddressed or poorly managed. Proactive protection now prevents complex dental care later. That is a straightforward equation every Fitchburg sports family can appreciate.
What to Do If a Dental Injury Happens Despite Protection
Even with the best mouthguard, accidents can occasionally happen. Knowing what to do in those first critical minutes can save a tooth. Acting quickly and calmly makes all the difference.
If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown — not the root. Rinse it gently and try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. If that is not feasible, place it in milk or the child’s saliva and get to a dentist immediately.
Cracked or chipped teeth should be assessed by a dental professional as soon as possible. Even if there is no visible pain right away, damage to the pulp or root may develop. Do not delay evaluation after any facial or dental impact.
SmileCare Dental of Fitchburg offers Emergency Dental Care for exactly these situations. Dr. Berenshteyn and the team are ready to respond quickly when your child needs urgent dental attention. Having a trusted dental home already in place makes stressful moments much easier to manage.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should a child start wearing a mouthguard for sports?
Children should wear a mouthguard as soon as they begin participating in contact or collision sports. This often starts around age five or six. Even younger children in recreational sports benefit from the added protection. Ask Dr. Berenshteyn at your child’s next checkup to discuss the right time to start.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
Most custom mouthguards last one to two sports seasons with regular use. Children’s mouths change quickly as they grow and develop new teeth. It is a good idea to have the fit assessed at each dental visit. Replace the guard if it shows signs of wear or no longer fits snugly.
Can my child wear a mouthguard with braces?
Yes — and it is especially important that orthodontic patients wear mouthguards during sports. A custom guard can be designed to accommodate braces without damaging brackets or wires. Store-bought guards are not ideal for kids with braces. Talk to Dr. Berenshteyn about an orthodontic-compatible guard.
Are mouthguards only necessary for full-contact sports?
No — many non-contact sports still carry dental injury risk. Basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and cycling all result in dental injuries every year. Any activity involving physical movement, equipment, or fall risk warrants consideration. Mouthguard use is a smart precaution across a wide range of youth sports.
How do I care for my child’s custom mouthguard?
Rinse the mouthguard with cool water before and after each use. Clean it with a toothbrush and mild soap regularly. Store it in the ventilated case provided by your dental office. Avoid exposing it to heat, which can warp the material and affect its fit.
